Our great friend Turkey just killed hundreds of the Syrian Kurdish fighters that the US was backing in its fight against ISIS, according to Reuters.
The Turkish military said in a statement it had killed 260 Syrian Kurdish fighters and ISIS militants in its offensive in northwest Syria. Yes, Turkey wants everyone to believe that the Kurdish force that spent the last year or so shooting at ISIS has now decided to hang out with them and watch football.
Over the weekend, NATO member Turkey launched an offensive against the US-backed Syrian Kurds, who spearheaded the fight against ISIS. So now the US is stuck trying to figure out whether to support their friends, the Kurds — who sacrificed and died going after terrorists — or support the NATO ally of Turkey, which hosts a massive air base.
The Kurds, for their part, are criticizing the Turkish statement.
“The whole world knows Daesh is not present in Afrin,” Redur Xelil, a senior SDF official, told Reuters.
I think the lieutenant in Full Metal Jacket said it best: “It’s a huge shit sandwich and we’re all gonna have to take a bite.”
